The transmission came at 3:17am. Static first. Then breathing. Then a voice that sounded like mine but older — corroded by something that had no name in any language still spoken.
I built a cathedral from deleted files / and prayed to the error messages / that flickered like candles / in the dark of a dead hard drive.
She ran the script at midnight every night for a year. The output was always the same three words. Until the night it was not.
Sing to me in frequencies / the living cannot hear. / I have tuned my bones to white noise. / I am ready to disappear.
Every soul has a file. Most are corrupted beyond recovery. His job was to find the ones that still had something worth saving — before the system purged them.
Dear whoever finds this in the wreckage / of the internet we used to know: / the light was always borrowed. / We just forgot to give it back.
